American Petroleum Institute releases pro-fossil fuel ad campaign in response to Russia's Ukraine invasion
It's precisely Indigenous people are worried about efforts to protect their lands and waters and where the Biden White House will ultimately stand.
Have you seen the following American Petroleum Institute Twitter campaign, launched just as the first explosions were being heard in Ukraine yesterday? How timely, just in time for the devastating ravages of war! And it’s exactly why Indigenous advocates are concerned that their anti-fossil fuel-based arguments for protecting their lands and water will get lost by the Biden White House in the shuffle of intense geopolitical energy posturing:
Notably, all of the American Petroleum Institute’s above suggestions fly in the face of the treaty-based beliefs of tribal leaders, water protectors and land defenders involved in the ongoing Dakota Access Pipeline battle and the Enbridge Line 5 conflict, as well those involved in last year’s Enbridge Line 3 dispute, during which the Biden administration stayed silent, no bombs necessary.
But all’s fair in war and war, right? Wait….
Anyway, some fun responses to the campaign have been pouring in on social media:
“Remember that time solar & wind energy prices spiked because of a foreign war? Of course you don't.”
“Geopolitics of oil has always been an albatross around the neck of a nation's economy ... more reason to phase out fossil fuels ... solar and wind provide the best energy security .. no vessels ... no pipelines ... and never spill‼️”
“OH MY GOD seriously?!? You’re taking this as an opportunity to push war profiteering?!? I would expect no less from the industry that has always valued profit over people. SMFH”
“im making the jerking off arm motion so hard right now”
“I agree we should unleash American energy. Just not fossil fuels. Solar, wind, and nuclear. As long as our energy grids are reliant on fossil fuels (which are priced in global markets) our energy systems will exist at the mercy of authoritarian foreign petrostates.”
“Didn't take @APIenergy long to try to exploit this crisis. Let's make sure @WhiteHouse doesn't fall for it.”
"See how the fossil fuel industry rushes in like vultures on a carcass."
And another, simple one: "Fuck off."
Happy Thursday, Wiredians!
